Topicals are cannabis-infused lotions, balms, and oils that are absorbed through the skin for localized relief of pain, soreness, and inflammation. Cannabis topicals work by binding to a network of receptors called the endocannabinoid system. We all have this system of receptors in our bodies ready to interpret the cannabis plant’s chemical compounds. The receptors are found in the brain, organs, connective tissue, immune cells, and even skin cells. When cannabis is used topically, the cannabinoids penetrate deep into that localized area, but they don’t have the psychotropic effects associated with smoking cannabis.
